This book gives readers the historical background to the birth of accountancy education, training and practice as well as the formation of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (Ghana) in 1963. It also outlines the evolution of professional associations in the Gold Coast and how some traders and artisans recognised the need for professional associations to unite and regulate the activities of its members in the Gold Coast.
The first six chapters of this book, which comprise of the footprints of gallant men and women whose selfless service brought us thus far, do not only give colour to the evolution of professional bodies across the 60 years but provide context for the conduct of qualifying examinations for membership of the Institute. The book also gives the history of accountancy education and certification in Ghana, highlighting the roles of Royal Society of Arts of the United Kingdom and the Institute of Professional Studies (now University of Professional Studies, Accra). The contribution of the University of Ghana Business School to accountancy education is traced from its cradle as the Commerce Department of the Kumasi College of Technology, through its infancy as the College of Administration to the present-day University of Ghana Business School.
The seventh chapter of the book puts in perspective the Institute’s past anniversary celebrations and makes suggestions for improvement in future anniversaries celebrations. The eighth and final chapter looks at the future of accounting profession and emerging accounting technologies.
This book can be used at all levels of the examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana. It is a good reference material for accounting personnel, academicians, students, practitioners, historians and at professional education seminars.
